What is Trauma?

Trauma is a psychological and emotional response to an event or series of events that overwhelm an individual’s ability to cope. It often results from experiences that threaten one's sense of safety, stability, or well-being, such as physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, accidents, natural disasters, or the sudden loss of a loved one. Trauma can manifest in a variety of ways, including emotional distress, anxiety, flashbacks, and difficulty trusting others. There are different types of trauma, including acute trauma, which results from a single, unexpected event; chronic trauma, which stems from repeated or prolonged exposure to distressing situations; and complex trauma, which arises from exposure to multiple, often interpersonal, traumatic events over time.

Each type of trauma can have a lasting impact on an individual’s mental and physical health, making it crucial to seek support for recovery.

Impact of Trauma

The impact of trauma is far-reaching and can affect every aspect of a person’s life. It may manifest emotionally, physically, and psychologically, influencing how someone views the world, interacts with others, and even how they care for themselves. Trauma can lead to feelings of shame, isolation, anxiety, depression, and difficulty with trust. Individuals who have experienced trauma may also struggle with relationships, work, and overall functioning.

Left unaddressed, trauma can result in chronic stress and long-term health problems, underscoring the importance of early intervention and professional support in the healing process.

Recongnizing the Signs

Signs You May Benefit From Trauma Therapy

Signs that you may benefit from trauma therapy include:

  1. Intrusive Memories or Flashbacks: You may experience vivid memories, nightmares, or flashbacks related to the traumatic event, making it difficult to function or relax.

  2. Emotional Numbness or Detachment: Feeling disconnected from others, emotionally numb, or having difficulty experiencing joy or love can be a sign of unresolved trauma.

  3. Avoidance of Triggers: You might avoid places, people, or situations that remind you of the traumatic event, or feel anxious when encountering anything related to the trauma.

  4. Difficulty Trusting Others: Trauma can deeply affect your ability to trust people, which might lead to isolating yourself from loved ones or feeling guarded and on edge around others.

  5. Persistent Anxiety or Depression: Feeling anxious, fearful, or hopeless for an extended period of time, or experiencing constant irritability, mood swings, or sadness, can be linked to trauma.

  6. Changes in Sleep or Appetite: Trauma can disrupt sleep patterns, causing insomnia or excessive sleep, as well as changes in appetite, leading to either overeating or loss of appetite.

  7. Self-Blame or Guilt: You might feel overwhelming guilt, shame, or blame for what happened, even if you weren't responsible for the traumatic event.

  8. Physical Symptoms: Trauma can manifest physically through symptoms like headaches, stomach issues, fatigue, or tension in the body, even without a clear medical cause.

  9. Difficulty with Daily Life: If trauma is interfering with your ability to function at work, school, or in relationships, it may be a sign that professional therapy is needed to help you heal.

If any of these signs resonate with you, seeking trauma therapy can provide the support and tools needed for healing and coping with the lasting effects of trauma.

Registered Psychotherapist

Hi, I'm Maryam!

As a psychotherapist dedicated to trauma-informed care, I support individuals in processing and healing from the lasting impacts of traumatic experiences. I am currently working toward my EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) certification, a powerful, evidence-based approach for trauma treatment. Additionally, I incorporate insights from Internal Family Systems (IFS) and engage in parts work, helping clients connect with and understand the different aspects of themselves shaped by their experiences. My approach creates a compassionate, safe space where clients can explore their inner worlds, process difficult memories, and move toward resilience and self-integration.
